Abstract The results of a single-laboratory evaluation and an inter-laboratory collaborative study of a method for determining uranium in water are reported. The method consists of coprecipitation of uranium with ferrous hydroxide, a nitric-hydrofluoric acid dissolution if the sample contains sediment, separation of the uranium by anion exchange chromatography, and electrodeposition, followed by alpha pulse height analysis. Four reference samples, ranging from 1 to 2,000 disintegrations per minute per liter, were prepared for evaluating the method. These samples consisted of two actual environmental samples, a substitute ocean water sample, and a sample containing sediment. Measured uranium concentrations for these samples agreed to within 5% of the reference concentrations, while tracer recoveries averaged about 70%. The precision of the collaborative study results approached counting statistics errors for the three water samples which did not contain sediment.
