Abstract |
The most significant knowledge gained during the Salmon Event was that large numbers of people can be successfully evacuated, and a comprehensive off-site radiological safety program can be successfully conducted in a populated area if the confidence of the people toward the operation is maintained. Considering the many occasions that the people were contacted relative to the surveys of the area and evacuation activities, extreme precautions were necessary to maintain the confidence of the people. In developing evacuation procedures, it was learned that each family had to be considered on an individual basis, and that questions relative to the operation had to be answered truthfully and as precisely as possible. The people in the area expressed considerable concern relative to when the shot would be detonated and what the effects might be on them and their surroundings. They expressed major concern over possible damage to their water wells due to structural or radiological effects. (Author) |
