Abstract The 256-acre Firestone Tire (Salinas Plant) site is in an agricultural area in Salinas, California. The facility was operated as a tire manufacturing plant from 1963 to 1980, in which a variety of chemicals and chemical formulations were used including solvents and surfactants. In 1983, as part of the requirements for the closure of a RCRA-regulated storage area at the facility, Firestone conducted an environmental investigation and determined that some chemicals had been released to the soil and ground water. The final remedy provides for additional cleanup of ground water under the site and as much as 2 1/2 miles from the site. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including 1,1-DCA, 1,1-DCE, 1,1,1-TCA, TCE, PCE, benzene, toluene, and xylenes. The selected remedial action for the site includes pumping and treatment of ground water.
