Abstract Natural assemblages of peritrichous ciliates that develop in the fouling film on glass slides and plastic Petri dishes in both summer and winter were examined in two ecosystems. Fouling in non-stressed communities proceeded to the same biomass and diversity during the winter, albeit more slowly, as that occurring during summer-time fouling. The reactions of the ciliates to the water-accommodated fraction (water phase of dispersion) of No. 2 fuel oil ranged from inapparent to almost total exclusion from the fouling film. Hydrocarbon stress of stabilized peritrich assemblages consistently resulted in a reduction of biomass.
