Abstract The use of anion exchange resin as a pretreatment step to Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is evaluated. Ohio River water and Palm Beach groundwater are used. The results show that resin pretreatment is significant in extending GAC performance. The active component modeling results show that the resins remove the weakly GAC adsorbing compounds but not the strongly adsorbing compounds. Therefore, resin pretreatment does not reduce GAC fouling.
