Abstract This report develops mathematical techniques that influence the development of urban air pollution but are not resolvable by grid networks used in airshed simulation models. These phenomena include turbulence-generated fluxes of pollutants, turbulence-induced fluctuations in the contaminant concentrations, and subgrid-scale variations in the mean concentration distribution. In addition, the report examines the problem of resolving the spatial details that exist in the mean concentration fields in the vicinity of point and line sources. The analysis concludes with a discussion of the problem of accounting for pollutant dispersion effects caused by buoyancy forces in hot stack exhausts.
