Abstract The amount of man-made debris found on beaches and at sea has become a concern in the United States and other parts of the world. Debris washed ashore diminishes the scenic value of beaches, and while adrift at sea can endanger marine wildlife. Of particular concern is plastic debris, which can entangle or be ingested by marine mammals, seabirds, fish, and sea turtles. Through quarterly surveys of established beaches, data is gathered through the National Park Marine Debris Monitoring Program to evaluate marine debris on continental U.S. beaches.
