Abstract This report was prepared at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency by the Committee on Aldehydes, which was appointed by the National Research Council in the Board of Toxicology and Environmental Health Hazards, Assembly of Life Sciences. The Clean Air Act requires that from time to time the Administrator of EPA evaluate the need for air-quality criteria on pollutants that may have adverse effects on man or the environment. This report is to be used by EPA in assessing the need for such criteria on some of the aldehydes. It is intended to identify and characterize the more important aldehydes that pollute the environment, the sources of their emission, their concentrations, their transformation and transport, their effects on the health of animals and humans, and their effects on the aquatic and terrestrial environments. It is not intended to recommend concentrations of polluting aldehydes for use in developing regulations, but rather to evaluate the available data for EPA to use in judging the need for regulatory strategies to control aldehyde pollution. It is hoped that wide dissemination of this report will inform physicians and other health professionals about the health effects of aldhydes and how they may be encountered at hazardous concentrations in the environment.
