Abstract Experimental protocol accompanying the launching and flight of a manned balloon (Project DaVinci II) to measure primary and secondary pollutants is described. Measurements obtained concurrently beneath the balloon at the earth's surface are also described. The flight occurred on June 8-9, 1976, days characterized by atmospheric stagnation. The data indicate that ozone trapped aloft by a nocturnal inversion decays slowly. Transport of ambient ozone at levels exceeding the Federal Air Quality standard is documented for over 150 miles downwind of St. Louis. These observations strongly support the contention that, in at least some instances, high levels of rural ozone are importantly influenced by long range transport from urban areas.
