Abstract This document represents a preliminary literature review which is being used as a basis for further evaluation. Ethylene does not appear to present a health hazard to humans or animals, but it is a phytotoxicant which disrupts the normal function of plant hormones and growth regulators. Ethylene air pollution has resulted primarily from automobile exhaust and other combustion sources. However, industrial emissions of ethylene can be a local source of contamination. Ethelene undergoes photooxidation reactions with nitrogen oxides, resulting in the formation of formaldehyde carbon monoxide and ozone.
