Abstract Catalytic converters are to be installed in the exhaust systems of new cars starting with 1975 model year. The use of catalytic converters is intended to control carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. However, the catalysts convert some of the sulfur in gasoline into sulfuric acid mist in the exhaust. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on oil refineries to produce unleaded, low-sulfur gasolines and also to desulfurize all gasolines produced for United States sales.
