Abstract Mercury uptake by yeast cells depleted in iron and magnesium has been studied with a view to developing a biosorption process for removal of mercury. Enhanced uptake of mercuric ions was observed, but the results were not as dramatic as the 15-fold increase in uptake believed possible from related work in the literature. Yeast does adsorb mercury up to 1% of the dry cell weight. A most unusual finding is that the mercury content of the cells increased as the mercury content of the contacting solution was lowered from 20 ppm to 1 ppm. The fact that only a part of the mercury was reversibly bound suggests that more than one binding mechanism is operating. (Author)
