Abstract The trace elements zinc, copper and manganese are essential for normal development in mammals. In this chapter we review the current state of knowledge on the roles of these trace elements in mammalian development, especially of the central nervous system. The effects of deficiencies of these trace elements during development in man and research animals are documented, including effects on prenatal structural morphogenesis and postnatal functional and behavioral development.
