Abstract A minipilot solar system (MSS) was built at MRI, transported to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and tested at NREL's high flux solar furnace. The MSS involved combustion of a liquid feed in a combustion reactor equipped with a quartz window at one end for solar input. Tests were carried out at two flow conditions, with nominal solar inputs of 8, 5, or 2 kW, as well as tests without solar input. The primary purpose of the test was to determine if the emission of Principal Organic Hazardous Constituents (POHCs) and/or Products of Incomplete Combustion (PICs) from the MSS were significantly lower when operated with solar input, as compared to operation without solar input, at the same liquid and air input rates and the same operating temperature.
