Abstract The biodegradation rates of p-nitrophenol, methylparathion and p-cresol were compared in test systems composed of sediment and water collected from various estuarine sites. p-Nitrophenol and methyl parathion degradation was fastest in intact sediment/water cores followed by sediment/water shake flasks and slowest in water shake flasks. p-Cresol degraded rapidly in all test systems. The applicability of a first-order kinetic model to describe the degradation of these compounds was examined. (Copyright (c) 1983 Pergamon Press Ltd.)
