Abstract Anomalously large short-term ozone concentrations were observed on several occasions by aircraft during an experiment on August 5, 1980, to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the Baltimore urban plume. The ozone 'spikes' of about 500 ppb were traversed by aircraft in less than 30 s (travel distance of less than 2 km). Analysis of these and ancillary data suggest that the ozone spikes may have resulted from ozone production by chemical reactions activated by lightning associated with thunderstorms.
