Abstract The industrial and domestic use of microwave power, as a source of heat, is increasing. The physical advantages of microwave heating, and the methods used to apply this form of energy in the processing industries are discussed. The need for a closer cooperation between the electronic systems designer and the environmental scientist is emphasized. Both have the responsibility of studying the biological effects of high frequency energy and ensuring the safety of operating personnel. The design of wavetraps and door seals will be considered in detail. Methods of both preventing and measuring leakage power in the microwave frequency spectrum is discussed. (Author)
