Abstract The study has attempted to quantify in monetary terms the effects of air pollution on the consumption of outpatient medical services. The hypotheses were that air pollution can aggravate a state of health resulting in increased consumption of outpatient medical services and in the number of contacts with the medical system for certain respiratory, cardiovascular, and other diseases aggravated by air pollution. The study period was 1969-1970, and centered in the Portland, Oregon area. Statistical models were formulated, explaining individual outpatient consumption of medical services. Measures of suspended particulate air pollution and meteorological conditions, as well as socioeconomic-demographic variables thought to influence the consumption of medical services, were included in the models as explanatory variables. The statistical results indicated that the procedures used in the study hold promise for quantifying the medical costs of air pollution. The results did show air pollution to have an effect on the consumption of outpatient medical services used to treat certain respiratory diseases.
