Abstract Early in 1974 serious concern began to mount within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with regard to possible degradation of the marine environment resulting from the practice of dumping into the open ocean certain untreated organic chloride wastes derived from the manufacture of vinyl chloride. Shell Chemical Company began to explore alternative methods for the disposal of these wastes during the interval when a land-based incinerator could be fabricated and put into use. The most promising of these alternatives appeared to be incineration of the wastes at sea aboard an incinerator ship such as M/T VULCANUS. The report discusses sea level monitoring program to determine whether or not the products of combustion would affect the marine environment adversely.
