Abstract This document is a review of the scientific knowledge of hydrogen sulfide in the environment. Chapter 2 contains a review of the occurrences, properties, and uses of hydrogen sulfide. In Chapter 3, the biogeochemical aspects of the sulfur cycle are discussed. Chapter 4 describes the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of sulfide in animals and humans. Chapter 5 is a summary of the experimentation that has been done on the effects of hydrogen sulfide in animals. In Chapter 6 the effects on humans are examined. A discussion of effects on vegetation and aquatic animals is in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 discusses the establishment of air quality standards or criteria for hydrogen sulfide. The odor of hydrogen sulfide is one of the most well-recognized characteristics of hydrogen sulfide; the psychological and aesthetic aspects of its odor are expounded in Chapter 9. Chapters 10 and 11 contain the summary and conclusions, and the subcommittee's recommendations. (Portions of this document are not fully legible)
