Abstract Four methods for the measurement of nitrogen dioxide in ambient air were studied concurrently to determine the intramethod and intermethod comparability of the data generated under a variety of carefully controlled conditions. Included were two automated continuous methods (chemiluminescence and colorimetric) and two manual methods (arsenite and TGS-ANSA). Simultaneous nitrogen dioxide measurements were made on a common air source using duplicate analyzers for each of the automated methods and quadruplicate samples for each of the manual methods. The study was conducted in three phases. Phase I measurements were made on ambient air to which extra NO2 was added in order to provide a wider range of concentrations. Phase II determined the effect of variable NO2 concentration fluctuations during a sampling period. Phase III was an investigation of suspected ozone interference with the automated continuous colorimetric method. The results of the study indicate that the four methods, when properly used, are capable of producing data that are in remarkably good agreement except in the case of the colorimetric method, which yields low results in the presence of high ozone concentrations.
