Abstract A project was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying an existing small trickling filter plant to control nutrients in wastewater discharge. All existing facilities of the nominal 0.3 mgd plant were utilized in the advanced waste treatment design. The processes control phosphorus by metallic salt addition to the primary settler, carbonaceous oxygen demand by trickling filters, and nitrogenous oxygen demand by suspended growth second stage activated sludge. Nitrogen is removed via attached growth column denitrification, and tertiary solids removal is accomplished by granular media filtration. These processes are operated in series. Process evaluation shows that an effluent can be obtained at the design flow of 0.3 mgd.
