Abstract In the last decade considerable research has been undertaken to evaluate methanol as an automotive fuel. This report attempts to summarize the physical and chemical properties of methanol, the comparison of such properties to those of gasoline and diesel fuels, the technical feasibility of methanol combustion in cylinder fuel-injected and cylinder fuel-inducted engines, and the exhaust emissions from methanol-fueled motor vehicles. In conclusion this report summarizes the fuel efficiency results of various studies of methanol-fueled vehicles.
