Abstract The Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Station (PAMS) requires the incorporation of surface and upper air meteorological instrumentation. The platform for the surface instrumentation is a 10 m tower. The variables to be collected include horizontal wind speed, horizontal wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, and barometric pressure. Upper air data may be acquired using a variety of platforms which include aircraft, tall towers, tethered and expendable radiosondes, and ground-based remote profilers. The variables to be collected include profiles of horizontal wind speed and direction, vertical wind speed, and air temperature. In addition, the mixing layer height should be determined from the upper air data. This paper summarizes the meteorological sensor requirements for PAMS which are not specifically addressed in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR Part 58).
