Abstract An evaluation of principal sources of ground-water contamination has been carried out in seven southeastern States--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Natural ground-water quality is good to excellent, except for the presence of saline water in some coastal aquifers. Principal sources of man-caused ground water quality problems in order of severity are: surface impoundments, landfills, underground storage of waste fluids and surplus water, leaks and spills, agricultural activities, mining activities, and septic tanks. This investigation indicates that the cases of ground-water contamination recorded to date and referenced in this report represent only a very small percentage of those that actually exist.
