Abstract In summer 1995, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Southern Illinois University conducted an intensive stream quality investigation at 66 sites in the Big Muddy River basin in southern Illinois. Stream conditions and factors contributing to use impairments were evaluated by the collection of water quality, fish and macroinvertebrate community data, sediment chemistry, and stream habitat data. Both point and nonpoint sources of impairment were evaluated for their impact on stream quality.
