Abstract The methylthymol blue (MTB) procedure used by EPA for sulfate analysis has been subjected to a ruggedness test. The method write-up has been modified to strengthen the procedure where required. A new procedure developed by EPA for extracting sulfates from the filter samples has been incorporated in the write-up. The absorbance for the MTB procedure has been established as hyperbolic. The method, as now presented, appears to be reasonably rugged with the exception of phosphate interference, which remains a problem. A potential approach for eliminating the phosphate interference is presented.
