Abstract Prevention of contact failure in low voltage contacts is the largest problem. Millions of low voltage contacts are used in computer and instrumentation circuits, and some provision must be made to ensure their reliable and continued operation. The sulfur gases are primarily responsible for the deleterious effect of air pollution on these contacts. More money is spent in the protection of low voltage contacts against the effects of sulfur gases than in all the other contact problem areas combined. Protection of low voltage contacts against sulfur gases takes two forms: the use of air conditioning and air purification equipment; the other kind of protection of contacts against sulfur gases is precious metal plating. The cost relating to failure of electrical devices caused by air pollution for 1968 is estimated to be about $64 million in the United States. Reducing current air pollution by 50 percen6 would have little effect on air pollution costs related to electrical devices, because any reduced level of recognized air pollution would still require that measures taken to combat air pollution effects be continued at the same level of effort. Industry does not know the amount of air pollution reduction needed to appreciably reduce the damaging effects on electrical contacts. (Author)
