Abstract Waste Minimization Assessment Centers (WMACs) were established at selected universities, and procedures were adapted from the EPA Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessment Manual (EPA/625/7-88/003, July 1988). The WMAC team at Colorado State University performed an assessment for a plant that manufactures sheet metal cabinets and precision metal parts. To make the cabinets, sheet metal is cut to size, bent, welded, and polished. The metal parts are then surface treated and painted. The machined parts are produced from bar stock which is cut, drilled, milled, and ground as needed. The team's report, detailing findings and recommendations, indicated that the most waste was generated by the chromate conversion and iron phosphate coating processes that prepare the parts for painting. The plant could achieve the greatest cost savings by replacing solvent-based painting with powder-based painting.
