Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the treatability of high strength meatpacking plant wastewater by land application. Both infiltration and overland flow type systems were studied at various hydraulic and organic loading rates. In addition to characterization of the raw and treated wastewater, laboratory and field studies were conducted in order to find one or more grasses which would be suitable for soil cover. Related investigations were also made regarding aerosol drift during high pressure and low pressure distribution, wastewater characterization from unit processes within the meatpacking plant, and chemical treatability of unit wastes using ferric chloride. Two warm season grasses (Bermuda NK-37 and Blue Panicum) and two cool season grasses (Kentucky-31 Tall Fescue and Jose Wheatgrass) were shown to grow very well when irrigated with the meatpacking plant wastewater.
