Abstract The paper discusses the performance of a new type of consumer product aerosol dispenser that allows the substitution of water for volatile organic compound solvents and air for hydrocarbon propellants. A key result is the production of sprays whose Sauter mean diameters are 70 micrometers and below for air/liquid ratios by mass of < 1%. High speed photographic and three-dimensional focused holographic images clearly demonstrate a difference in the near nozzle when compared to an earlier design. Both designs exhibit a tree-like breakup regime, but a larger number of smaller ligaments are present in the current nozzel. In addition, the unstable ligaments appear to break up at much shorter wavelengths, resulting in smaller drops being formed.
