Abstract This report presents the findings and interpretations of data collected from the study of finger-fill canals in Charlotte, Monroe and Bay Counties, Florida and in Carteret County, North Carolina. Field investigations were conducted to: Characterize water chemistry, sediment chemistry and biological aspects of existing finger-fill canals; compare canal conditions of various sizes, ages and stages of residential development; determine flushing rates of various canal configurations; quantify and qualify the mass exchange of nutrients between canals and receiving waters; verify the presence of septic tank/sorbtion field leachates in canals from development, and verify by field measured tracers the application of predictive mathematical models. The information contained in this report should provide supporting data for future assessments of water quality effects of finger-fill canal developments.
