Abstract This research was directed toward an examination of methods by which coal mine water could be treated for removal of manganese. In order to remove manganese from mine water, strong oxidizers must be employed to oxidize it to the (+4) oxidation state in which it is relatively insoluble and will precipitate as MnO2. Both ozone and hypochlorite ion were effective in this oxidation and reduced manganese concentrations to less than 2 mg/l and in some cases to less than 0.05 mg/l. Reaction orders based on initial reaction rates are reported for the manganese (II) at pH values of 2, 4, 6 and 7.9 in the time intervals studied. Solubilities of both manganese (II) hydroxide and manganese (IV) oxide were measured. Cost data were developed for both the ozone and sodium hypochlorite treatment.
