Abstract Problems encountered in burning low-sulfur coal in electrical utility power plant boilers are discussed. Operating experience with electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), fabric filter baghouses, and wet scrubbers for control of fly ash stack emissions and techniques for improving performance are described. Increasing the collection efficiency of ESPs for high-resistivity fly ash by adding conditioning agents (e.g., sulfur trioxide, sulfuric acid, ammonium sulfate, sulfamic acid, and ammonia) to the flue gas is discussed, as are possible mechanisms for their action. Experiments are described on the reentrainment of fly ash as the result of rapping ESP collection electrodes. A mathematical model is described that calculates the collection efficiency of an ESP as a function of particle size and operating conditions. A mathematical model is also presented for fabric filter action.
