Abstract The report summarizes the data on western coal statistics, combustion, and mining. Detailed information is presented for coal occurrence, production, composition, and physical and chemical properties. Discussions and economic analyses are given of available mining techniques and transportation modes to bring these vast coal reserves to large fuel combustion markets. The effects of western coal properties on combustion equipment operation and emissions to the atmosphere are evaluated. The overall impact of increased western coal production on the environment is also analyzed and recommendations are made for further investigation of problematic areas.
