Abstract This report describes the results of a screening survey conducted in several northern New Mexico communities to estimate the levels of radon progeny (working levels) in buildings constructed of materials containing pumice. This locally-produced material is used as a lightweight aggregate in concrete blocks, and contains slightly elevated levels of natural radionuclides. The screening survey results indicate that the use of pumice block may increase the working level in the structure, although the effect is so small that it is difficult to separate it from background variations and from the variability caused by other parameters.
