Abstract Models of follicular development in rodents that may be applicable to reproductive toxicology are considered. The value of evaluating changes in follicular numbers during the estrous cycle is stressed. Most of the methods involve in vivo manipulations. However, the use of enzymes to dissociate intact follicles from the ovary and their subsequent in vitro development in the presence or absence of xenobiotics offers an alternative, attractive approach.
