Abstract The objectives of this project were twofold: First, a comprehensive land use inventory was undertaken to assist Maine DEP in developing a Phosphorus Control Action Plan and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) report for the Threemile Pond watershed. Simply stated, a TMDL is the total amount of phosphorus that a lake can receive without harming water quality (see Appendices). The Maine DEP, with the assistance of the MACD Project Team, will incorporate public comments before final submission to the US EPA. Secondly, watershed survey work, including a shoreline and septic survey evaluation, was conducted by the Maine DEP-MACD project team to help assess the Threemile Pond watershed. Watershed survey work included assessing direct drainage nonpoint source (NPS) pollution sites that were not identified during the Threemile Pond Watershed Nonpoint Source Pollution Survey conducted in 1996 (Maine DEP). The China Region Lakes Alliance (CRLA) as part of its Watershed Management Plan (1998-2008) intends to conduct a comprehensive follow-up watershed survey. The results of this assessment and some general recommendations for future conservation work in the watershed have been included to help citizens, organizations, and agencies restore and protect Threemile Pond.
