Abstract The Standard Evaluation Procedure for Eye Irritation Studies states the purpose and requirements, and the test is further defined in the Pesticide Assessment Guidelines (Subdivision F, Hazard Evaluation: Human and Domestic Animals, (1982, revised 1984)). Background information is given on the development of the test, animal models, scoring system, labeling, and factors affecting the results. There are discussions on objective and alternative technologies, evaluation based on weight-of-evidence, epidemiological data, and low dose and dose response studies. A tier system is presented incorporating present methods and possible future alternatives. Data Reporting Guidelines (Subdivision F, Series 81-4, Eye Irritation) are available (National Technical Information Service (NTIS), accession no. PB88-161179; EPA document no. 540/09-88-023).
