Abstract Soil gas data are widely used in site investigation and remediation projects to delineate volatile organic compound (VOC) vapor plumes, as a screening tool to refine soil and groundwater sampling efforts, to track the progress of soil remediation, and to identify potential risks from the inhalation of indoor air potentially contaminated by soil gas. The overall goal of any monitoring or sampling program is to enable the collection of representative samples; that is, samples that are representative of the environmental, chemical, and physical conditions present during the time of sample collection. Over a period of time, collection of a sequence of representative samples can enable a better understanding of trends in the data set regarding the fate and transport of the chemicals being monitored. However, due to numerous environmental as well as sampling and analytical variables, the representativeness of a sample can often be compromised, the degree to which is often not well understood or quantified.
