Abstract A comprehensive review of the literature published since 1 January 1954 was conducted to prepare this preliminary investigation report on the physical and chemical properties of antimony (Sb) and its compounds, on the environmental factors related to their consumption and use, on the health and environmental effects resulting from exposure to Sb and antimonials, and on the regulations and standards governing their use. Antimony and its compounds, although not ranked among the biggest volume chemicals in the U.S., are industrially significant because of their contribution to the manufacture of many commonly-used products, such as alloys, paint, paper, plastics, and textiles. Antimony trioxide (antimony oxide) is used to impart flame resistance to plastics, textiles, and other products. Antimony dusts have been associated with the development of pneumoconiosis in miners and other workmen. Some antimony compounds are toxic, or give rise to toxic decomposition products, but no serious occupational poisoning has been associated with the industrial use of antimony.
