Abstract The report on the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans was prepared as a contribution to the Pilot Study on International Information Exchange on Dioxins and Related Compounds. The report describes the state of the art with respect to combustion and thermal processes which lead to the formation of PCDDs/PCDFs. These compounds were identified in the emissions of various combustion processes including, municipal waste incinerators, fossil fuel plants, automobiles, wood burning stoves, and PCB fires. Theoretical and experimental investigations were carried out to elucidate the formation mechanisms of PCDPs and PCDFs in combustion processes and in other high temperature processes. Although considerable progress has been made, more work is needed to eventually predict the emissions of these compounds.
