Abstract Thirty-Four inorganic chemical products were screened for the purpose of establishing wastewater effluent limitations guidelines for existing sources, standards of performance for new sources, and pretreatment standards for new and existing sources in the study. The screening studies showed that only the plant process wastewaters from the first 17 subcategories contain significant quantities of toxic metals at treatable levels. (The Calcium Hypochlorite (Bleaching Powder) subcategory also generates treatable levels of toxic and nonconventional pollutants but that industry is intimately associated with the chlor-alkali industry and will be covered as part of the chlor-alkali subcategory. A considerable amount of toxic pollutant removal is presently achieved in the industry by the existing control and treatment practices. Additional removal can be accomplished by the application of available and demonstrated technologies which would add to or modify existing treatment systems.
