Abstract |
The report gives results of an analysis of the constraints and environmental impact of converting selected industries to low- and intermediate-energy gas from coal. Two target industries, the secondary steel industry and the petroleum refining industry, were selected for analysis. A hypothetical model plant was developed for each target industry and characterized as to layout, energy use, combustion process characteristics, and relation to the respective target industry as a whole. A gasifier and gas-cleaning system combination was selected for each model plant and sized to provide sufficient low- or intermediate-energy gas to replace the model plant's requirement for natural gas and oil. Material and energy balances were made for each model plant, and the constraints involved in process modification, along with the potential environmental impact, were evaluated. |
