Abstract Myxophyceae and cyanophyta may be the cause of toxic or allergic contact dermatitis and like algae may cause atopic hypersensitivity. Algae (Phycophyta, Algophyta) cause often symptoms of atopic hypersensitivity after inhalation of the allergen. Cases of allergic contact dermatitis are more rare. Achloric algae of the genus Prototheca are also parasites of man in exceptional circumstances (protothecosis).
