Abstract An analytical solution for the flow of water through a large-scale laboratory aquifer consisting of three soil layers is presented. It is assumed that each layer is saturated, that the soil is homogeneous but may be anisotropic and that the flow of water in each layer is two-dimensional; that is, the flow at the inflow and outflow boundary is uniform over the entire aquifer width. The solution includes a flux boundary condition at the surface which allows recharge to, or a loss from, the upper aquifer. The solution is presented in terms of the hydraulic head and the stream function. The features of the solution are illustrated with several examples.
