Abstract The paper reports results of a study investigating three different possibilities for replacing refrigerant R-22 with R-407C in a heat pump. The first and simplest scenario was a retrofit without any hardware modifications. The second possibility was a modification that required altering the refrigerant path to attain a near-counterflow configuration in the indoor coil for the heating mode. The third and most complex possibility was soft optimization, consisting of maximizing the coefficients for performance (COPs) in the heating and cooling modes by optimizing the refrigerant charge and expansion devices.
