Abstract The National Advisory Committee on Radiation was formed in 1958 by the Surgeon General of the U. S. Public Health Service, to provide him guidance in matters pertaining to the control of radiation hazards in the United States. Among the many assignments which have been given the Committee since its inception, one has been the task of evaluating the programs currently followed in this country to protect the health and well being of the public from the hazards of ionizing radiation. This report presents the conclusions reached by the Committee after its study of this important subject.
