Abstract An extensive array of tools is available to help ecologists study community structure. Increasingly, the authors rely on the more abstract of these tools, for example, mathematical models of varying complexity and multivariate statistical techniques, which are useful and often appropriate. Studies of stream fish communities can make substantial contributions to the authors understanding of community structure and function. The authors were motivated to respond to Herbold's (1984) paper because of his failure to use adequate autecological information in studies of this type and because of our concern that Herbold's conclusions about pool and riffle fishes might pass unchallenged into some theoretical framework related to stream fish communities.
