| Abstract |
A study of industrial solid waste disposal in three northwest Ohio counties, including Toledo, Ohio, and three townships of Southeast Monroe County, Michigan, was undertaken. Disposal facilities and transfer stations are of the sanitary landfill or modified landfill type; no existing disposal facility has a useful life of more than one year. Industries are listed in a table according to county and Standard Industrial Classification. Most of the industries fall in the fabricated metals and non-electrical machinery classifications; 993 industries employ a total of 75,322 persons. Another table itemizes the waste tonnage per year for the various classifications and according to type of waste. A third table lists the solid waste tonnage per year for each county and for each type. A solid waste crisis is judged to exist in the area, resulting from lack of long-term planning and improper maintenance of solid waste disposal facilities. Public relations represent another problem; persons observing an unsatisfactory operation classified as a sanitary landfill hold this image in mind for all disposal facilities. Cooperation between industry and political subdivisions in solving collection and disposal problems is urged. Portions of this document are not fully legible. |
